What is Ovarian Cancer? What are the Symptoms?

2012-2013

Dr. Robert C. Knapp Medical Student Award Guidelines

Overview:

H.O.W. (Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper) is offering an interesting and unique award for students who would like to learn about a career in gynecologic oncology by shadowing a gynecologic oncologist during their future summer vacation time and/or elective time. The student must fulfill a minimum time commitment of four weeks.

The following is required for the $3,000 medical student award:

  • Elective between the first and second year or elective time thereafter.
  • Time spent on the elective must be a minimum of four weeks.
  • The gynecologic oncologist who serves as preceptor may be a member of the facility or if not, acceptable to the school and meets all legal and academic requirements of the school.
  • The CV of both the student and preceptor must be submitted at the time of application.
  • The student and preceptor will submit to H.O.W. an outline of the students program. This could describe a week’s activity shadowing the preceptor. The program should be broad enough to allow the student to develop an understanding of the requirements for a physician practicing women’s cancer.  The student should be with the preceptor during outpatient clinic visits, surgery and be involved with the residents during the preceptor’s sessions with them. The preceptor should discuss with the student current research in gynecologic oncology and needs for future research in the field.
  • At the completion of the rotation the student will submit to H.O.W. a one page report on his or her experience.
  • The student will receive from H.O.W. a stipend of $3,000. If the student presents at a recognized society, H.O.W. will contribute an additional $2,000 toward expenses.

Deadline: June 30, 2012.

Please submit the outline of the program and the CV of the student and preceptor electronically to Jennifer McGrath at jmcgrath@phfpbc.org and Dr. Robert C. Knapp at Robert_Knapp_ma82@post.harvard.edu.  A hard copy may also be mailed but not necessary to:  H.O.W. Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper, 1016 North Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, FL 33401.

The award will be given during the academic year of July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013.  If the students have not been selected by July 1, we will have a rolling acceptance until the four students have been selected. If the rotation begins prior to July 1, then the application will be quickly processed and the applicant notified.
