Andie MacDowell
Andie MacDowell is a former model who successfully transitioned to acting. In the early 1980s, she modeled for Vogue Magazine and appeared in ad campaigns for Yves Saint Lauren, Vassarette, Armani Perfume, Sabeth-Row, Mink International, Anne Klein, and Bill Blass. It was a series of billboards in Times Square and national commercials for Calvin Klein that brought her widespread attention.
She landed her film debut with a leading role in "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes" (1984), in which her Southern twang was dubbed over by the more erudite voice of actress Glenn Close; she managed to shake off the indignity with a more winning performance in "St. Elmo's Fire" (1985) before landing her critically acclaimed breakthrough role in the indie classic, "sex, lies and videotape" (1989). In 1994, she earned the title of #1 female box office draw worldwide thanks to her performances in the romantic comedy smash hit "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and the western "Bad Girls". Though in later years she appeared more in indie films and on television, MacDowell has remained one of Hollywood's most viable leading actresses.
Andie has also achieved a great deal of success in her personal life. She received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina, for her dedication to the Graham Children's Health Center. She has also become a spokeswoman for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and supported the ENOUGH project, along with sponsorship with L'Oreal Paris. In addition to her noted acting awards, in 1997 she received the Golden Camera Award from Germany, and the Cesar d'Honneur (Honorary Award) for her body of film work.
Karen H. Lu, M.D.
Dr. Karen H. Lu will also speak to guests at the luncheon. She is a Professor in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Her main clinical interests include the surgical and medical treatment of women with ovarian and endometrial cancers, as well as the management of women at genetically high risk for these cancers. She is Co-Director for Clinical Cancer Genetics and Director of the High Risk Ovarian Cancer Screening Clinic. In addition, she serves as Co-Director of the Endometrial Cancer Research Program and Co-Principal Investigator of the Uterine Cancer Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE).
